Mark Rutte is officially in office once again after defeating what was a scary populist movement led by Geert Wilders in Netherlands. Geert Wilders, the leader of the far right Party for Freedom (PVV), stated that he would ban the Qur’an in the Netherlands if he won the elections and spurred general Islamophobic and anti-refugee rhetoric throughout his campaign.
This wouldn’t be the first time that we have seen the far right gain more and more popularity within elections as the majority are sick and tired of the same old failing parties who play puppets to the elite. Due to these mainstream parties failing year on year to improve lives of their citizens, people become frustrated and turn to the extremes, mainly right wing extremes who scapegoat Muslims, immigrants, refugees, anyone who is not the same skin colour, religion or nationality.
This was quite evident in the run up to Brexit and Donald Trump becoming President with Trump, Cameron and Farage inciting racist rhetoric towards refugees and Muslims as a whole. Donald Trump famously stated that he would ban all Muslims entering the US until they could figure out “what the hell is going on” and of course Nigel Farage with his big poster of refugees lining up with the caption “BREAKING POINT The EU has failed us all” which interestingly was quite a similar poster to one that Hitler created using Jewish people but nonetheless, we saw Brexit happen and Trump gain control of the most powerful nation on Earth.
It only seemed inevitable that the Party for Freedom would gain control and see another country taken over by a far right government who are intent on making the lives of every single minority in the country absolute hell. However, the liberal country that is Netherlands managed to keep a liberal Prime Minister in power pushing Geert Wilders and his party into joint second place with three other parties.
Mark Rutte still has to create a coalition government to gain control but he has completely ruled out going into a coalition with the PVV, which is great news. This rise in right wing populism is quite scary and you would think that now, in the 21st century, after two horrible world wars, after the ongoing conflicts all over the world, that people would finally wake up and realise that fighting solves nothing; the only way forward is to be united as a people regardless of religion, skin colour, and race. We are all human beings and we should not let the acts of the smallest minority stir such great conflict amongst the majority.
We must stand together and stand up to any form of oppression whether it be racism, discrimination, homophobia; whatever it may be we must fight it together. We are all individuals, yet the same and that is what makes the world a beautiful place, but many people out there believe that all Muslims are terrorists, that all black people are criminals, that all gay people are sinful; but this is not the case and again it comes to a case of not letting the smallest minority cause conflict amongst the majority and that it what we all need to remember.
We must celebrate our differences but realise that we are also the same, we all live on planet Earth, we all belong to the human race, any form of inferiority or superiority whether it be in wealth, class, caste etc. was created by us, which means it can also be destroyed by us. Break the Chains wishes to spread this message of unity and solidarity to all in the hope that we can bring about a more loving, accepting, peaceful world and to show that even in the darkest of times, there is always a beacon of light to change the world.
